Insurance Charity Golf Day 2011

The finest collection of golfers in the London Insurance firmament* gathered once again at Stoke by Nayland for our annual Charity Golf Day. On a lovely day for golf, warm enough for shirtsleeves and shorts but not for dehydration, the Gainsborough and Constable courses presented themselves in tip-top condition so there was really no excuse for underachieving. The previous evening’s downpours had even softened the greens a touch but had still left the fairways dry and running. A quick word of thanks here to the Managing Director at the club, Susanna Rendell who intervened personally to ensure that scarification of the greens was not carried out in the week before the event as had been planned.

We lined up the usual array of competitions and the most fiendish of them all this year was the Putting Competition on the recently relaid putting green. The variety of humps and hollows confounded everybody with not one single putt holed all day. Short of placing a small windmill in front of the hole, it could not have been too much closer to a hole of crazy golf. The nearest attempt was 22 inches away. That’s not even a gimme!!

On a day of overall good but not exceptional scoring one of our regular participants scooped first prize in the 18 hole Stableford with a remarkable 45 points, 6 clear of the nearest opposition. Andy Smith put this down to the number of single putts he made (but clearly this didn’t continue into the putting competition). We had a three way tie for 2nd place between Messrs Piercy, Dagger and Scayfield (sounds more like a firm of solicitors I reckon) so the placings were (as per tradition) decided on countback. Terry Lees took the prize for the best back nine with 22 points, also very commendable.

The Scramble competitions also scored well but again not quite as low as in previous years with a net 57.7 (14.3 under par) scooping first place. Well done to the “UIB Tour Bankers” and commiserations to Guy Carpenter who were just 0.3 behind them.

No holes in one this year but plenty of close attempts and eight different winners of nearest pin prizes on the par 3s. Two prizes were one by one of the Committee teams with Paul Sandfield picking up nearest pin on the Gainsborough 18th, one of only a handful of shots to hit the putting surface on our “gambling hole”.

James Bobbit got the guns out to smash the ball 286 yards to claim the longest drive on Gainsborough 4th – it was also slightly into the wind this year!

Many thanks to all who took part and to our volunteers, Adrian, Lesley, Chloe, Lara, Hannah and Sabrina who did so much to help the event run so smoothly. Thanks also to Ian Wilson from Cancer Research UK who gave an informative speech about the work of the charity and progress that’s being made to curing and preventing cancers.

Special thanks to the Stoke by Nayland Club for hosting us once again and in particular to Mary and Roly. Thanks to the Head Greenkeeper and his staff and everyone who made us so welcome at the golf club and the hotel for those that stayed over.

Finally our grateful thanks to our main corporate supporter Xchanging for their fantastic support of the event and to UIB and Newman, Martin & Buchan for their contributions.

Overall when we had a final tot up of the accounts we were delighted to discover that the event profit came to a whopping £14,602! Truly wonderful in these hard times.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to sunny Stoke by Nayland on 10th August 2012 (provisional date) for our next golf day.
